Signtime’s mission is to make the world accessible to deaf people. Their tool SiMax can translate any text into sign language by utilizing 3D animation technology & rendering. This results in semi-automated translation suggestions which are then fine-tuned by a human deaf translator to ensure a high-quality translation.

How we made it happen
Challenge
From broken alpha to lean development process and a running system
The “native” language of deaf people is sign language and written texts are not accessible to them. While human translators are great, they are also hard to find and have very limited time to produce the vast amount of content that should be made accessible to the deaf community.
The Sign Time team approached us with an alpha version of their software for translating text into 3D animated sign language SiMAX, which they could not extend as it was developed by an external partner.
Approach
Setting up development in-house
After a first assessment, it became apparent that Sign Time needed to re-develop their software and move development in-house. That’s why we helped them with- finding developers for in-house development,
- running the right experiments in order to validate the correct development approach,
- setting up an agile development structure,
- choosing the fitting technologies and stack
- prioritizing their feature roadmap constantly.
Result
Eventually, this turned into very close collaboration, as Sign Time approached us with other needs as well. We supported them in the setup & leadership of an agile development team, as well as in delivering multi-million EU projects. As a result, we also set up their in-house infrastructure and developed a sign language quiz app called “Hands-Up” which was shown as part of the “Hands-Up” exhibition in Vienna.
